We understand that many of our patients delay treatment simply because they are afraid of the dentist - you are not alone. Roughly one half of the population has a fear of the dentist. In order to relieve or lessen this fear we offer three options: Oral Sedation, Nitrous Oxide, and IV Sedation.
Oral sedation is a prescription pill that you take at home before coming to your dental appointment. This medication causes drowsiness and amnesia. When you take medication you must have someone else drive you to your appointment and drive you home afterwards. Patients who have had oral sedation say that they felt deeply relaxed or forgot parts of their appointment. While some patients sleep through their appointment, others will be comfortably relaxed. The medication will wear off within one to two hours after your appointment.
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, provides you with a relaxing feeling during your appointment. The effect of the nitrous oxide goes away with in a few minutes after your dental procedure has been completed. You will also require someone to drive you home from your appointment after having nitrous oxide.
IV moderate sedation provides a deeper relaxation than any of our other sedation options. With this type of sedation an IV is started in one of your vein's and medication is delivered to you which allows you to relax more deeply and more controlled than with oral sedation. With IV moderate sedation, previously referred to as "conscious sedation" you are able to respond to the doctor and are awake but extremely relaxed, you may even fall asleep as an added benefit you will not remember the procedure that you had done.
